WHAT WE DO
Ken Taylor NZCD (Arch) started Designshop Architecture in 1989, and was one of the first in New Zealand to adopt computer assisted design as distinct from computer assisted drafting. Ken has many years experience in conceptual design, contract documentation and project management, "hands on" site construction experience across a wide variety of project types and sizes. Add to this skills in graphic design, videography and photography, and you have a balance of design and practical skills not often found today.
Designshop Architecture handles new projects, and alterations/additions, across a variety of project sizes and complexities throughout the South Island and lower North Island. Much work today is done by the internet or from a mobile studio, as well as studios in Dunedin and Christchurch.
Ken has designed buildings across a wide range of types including:
Residences, Apartments, Retirement Villages, Hotels and Motels.
Churches, Museums, Hospitals, Schools, and Preschool Facilities.
Industrial, Commercial, and Retail Buildings.
Aviation and Search/Rescue facilities.
Sports and Cultural Buildings.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
The optimal design for a building is a balance of aesthetics, economics, and function. The influence of each will vary by project, but all require detailed and open minded consideration from first principles, not driven by an agenda or fashion.
A building is an integral part of it's social and physical environment in the widest sense. It may blend in unobtrusively, or make a bold statement, but it must be sensitive to it's environment, be capable of adapting to change, and maintain its appearance and functionality over extended periods of time. This may seem rather old fashioned in a world driven by faddish fashion and consumerism, but we believe these principles have stood the test of time. That doesn’t mean unexciting architecture though...have a look at our portfolio.
At Designshop Architecture we work with you with open communication, setting goals, and evaluating solutions. We actively seek your comments and wishes, and work side by side with you at the computer to assist communicating ideas both ways.
Eco building and leaky buildings? At Designshop Architecture we have applied eco principles and sound detailing since we started in business because we believe it is the only way to build. Unlike some of our competition we have not just discovered eco makes a marketing line, or leave our clients with buildings that leak or decay!
